More Crime Report Web Sites - Including an IPhone app.

The last post mentioned a site called CrimeReports.com. Here is a similar site http://www.spotcrime.com/
that also provides you with recent statistical information of crimes for chosen location.

I find it a little harder to use because this site requires the user to sign up. (free) Something I really liked which CrimeReports.com did not offer was an application dedicated to the iPhone. *see below

Next time you’re looking for a house or rent make sure to check out the neigborhood area with SpotCrime. And while you are at it you might also want to run it through national sex offender registry. These reports may not be 100 % accurate but should be enough to give you a basic idea about the place.

Features:
  • View latest criminal activity reports in your area.
  • Crime reports are collected from local news sources and police records.
  • Crimes are classified by type: Theft, Burglary, Robbery, Assault, Arson, Shooting, Arrest and so on.
  • Currently supports only large cities within US. More towns are being added.
  • Access and Search from iPhone (www.spotcrime.com/iphone.php).
MORE STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW

Look up Crime Reports in your area

Moving? Buying a house? Traveling to an unfamiliar destination? Or maybe there has been a burglary nearby and you would like to be better informed.  Recently I stumbled across a real gem.

The web site located at  http://crimereports.com/ will most likely provide the information you need. Not all law enforcement departments participate, but more often than not, you should be able to find your area listed.

I have not explored the site to the fullest, so I have not determined if one is able to suggest an are not listed. The data is presented very clearly. A map is displayed with your current location shown in the center. Details of the incidents are listed in order of proximity. A very useful site answering the questions previously mentioned.

Of course, maybe you are just curious like me or there is an underlying reason not mentioned that creates the need for you to access this type of information. Either way, definitely worth bookmarking.
This is STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW!

Disk2vhd Turns Your PC Into a Virtual Machine

Sysinternals application Disk2vhd takes a snapshot of your PC, and turns it into a Microsoft Virtual PC virtual hard drive—while your system is up and running. Using the software, which requires no installation, is as easy as launching, selecting the drives you would like to create into a virtual disk, giving the file a name, and clicking the Create button. The utility uses the same volume snapshot feature that Windows uses for backup utilities, so it doesn't matter if software is running or not—but you'll have best results if you create the virtual disk on a separate drive.

Online Banking using Windows could prove costly!

October 01, 2009

Important: Read this article if you use Windows to do your on-line banking!
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10363836-83.html?tag=nl.e757

Some real smart guys at Finjan, an internet security company have discovered at least in part a new Trojan horse program that does more than steal your user log-in information. Apparently this little bug also takes money out of your account for as long as you are logged in to your bank, and it also has the ability to display a fake balance while taking all your hard-earned cash.

The program is very sophisticated, as it can calculate just how much money to steal from a particular account based on the balance, and it can do this while you are looking at your balance, or just have the page up and perhaps stood up to get a drink, etc. It keeps you logged in, without letting the page expire.

Photographer's tool for creating studio lighting diagrams available FREE

I am an avid photographer. I shoot mostly studio product or advertising stills. There are times when I want to record how I lit a particular object or set. I often just draw it out on a pad, then lose it, or my notes are not all that legible. Recently a fellow photographer led me to a site that has made this process a lot better, more fun and a lot more usable.

Do your invoices look like the dog ate them again? Free online invoicing!

I operate several small freelance businesses. Although generally, I can manage to write a half-way decent invoice using an excel spreadsheet, or at worst a word processor, at times I wonder what my clients think of the totally different invoices they get from the same person.
I also have had problems in the past when asked for a copy of an invoice, usually because the customer has lost it or needed it for a tax audit. In any case, I came across a site that solved all the problems I have with my invoicing and has organized my business invoicing needs. The best thing about it, well it is totally FREE!
You simply will be astounded by the site at: http://www.billingboss.com/home

Next time you start to feel that Road Rage coming on...

If you drive on anywhere in a major metropolitan area, you have probably at least once felt like doing some damage to a driver who has acted in such a stupid or dangerous manner, that it endangered or threatened you or your passengers. Perhaps you need to get somewhere quickly and get stuck behind the s l o o w e s t  driver ever. Well, don't let it get to you. Now there is a healthy outlet for your pent-up anger or frustration. Yes, you can actually do something about it using your computer, or even your web-enabled phone, although I recommend you wait until you pull over or reach your destination, and not try this while driving.
Simply navigate to:http://www.zapatag.com/
I simply love this site. You can report all the dumb drivers, and what they did using their license plate to

If I use a cellphone, can it save money on Xrays?

Huh? Maybe... Try taking your phone to your local hospital next time you fracture something.
OK so that is probably pushing it a bit far. But according to all the recent media hype, we are supposed to be getting brain cancer and all sorts of other problems due to the constant bombardment of microwaves our neurons are subjected to on a daily basis.
I recently stumbled onto a great site where you can get the scoop on all this. It is located here:
http://www.ewg.org/project/2009cellphone/cellphoneradiation.php
They have an online tool that lets you enter your cell phone model and rates it according to some scientific data that is way over my head. It also rates the best and worst offenders (cell phones) for radiation and lets you read all the research in regards to how fast we fry our brains.
